Pitch versus Gullet Depth

At high feed speed and/or increased log sizes, the gullet must be able to hold more sawdust. This can be achieved with a deeper gullet or a longer pitch. To keep a well-proportioned tooth profile, the depth of the gullet is normally expressed in parts of the pitch; the figure gives some guidelines.

The base line of the tooth will be weaker the deeper the gullet is. This is a disadvantage when harder wood is to be sawn. The best way to increase the gullet area for hardwood is to increase the pitch.
