Clearance Angle

In order to prevent the back of the tooth tip from rubbing the wood in the cut there must be a certain amount of clearance. This angle is given by the cutting speed of the blade and the feed speed. From this point of view it should not be less than 10° . The clearance angle also affects the strength of the tooth tip and its swageability. The illustration gives some recommendations. To the right the rubbing action is illustrated.

Choice of clearance angle. Rubbing action to the right. The illustration has been exaggerated to make the point clear.
