Gullet Capacity The actual size of the gullet is given by the pitch. The size of the gullet controls the maximum cutting height, log size and feed speed. The gullet must be able to accommodate the produced amount of sawdust. One way to find the gullet area is to draw a sketch of the tooth on a graph paper and count the squares. Another way is to use a rule of thumb which says that the gullet area is roughly the pitch times the depth divided by 1.75, see the figure on the left. It is known from experience that you cannot utilize the full gullet capacity. The gullet will start spilling with drastically deteriorated accuracy to the size of the lumber before 100% of the gullet area is used. The utilized gullet capacity should be about 50%-75% of the gullet area. There are a lot of different opinions on this subject.
